Does Your First Time Determine Every Time? | YourTango

Losing Virginity
What was your first time like?

A new study says how you lost your virginity stays with you the rest of your love life.

You know how you mother always told you first impressions tend to stick? She might have been right ? even in ways she was certainly not referring to. According to new research, the tone set when you lose your virginity apparently stays the rest of your love life ... forever.?

More from YourTango: Coming Out Lowers Stress In Canada, But Would It In The US?

University of Tennessee psychology doctoral student Matthew Schaffer and C. Veronica Smith, Ph.D., University of Mississippi assistant psychology professor, designed a study to observe the ways in which your virginity loss affects your future sex life. The study, published in the Journal of Sex and Martial Therapy, looks at whether or not there are consequences or benefits to how unpleasantly or happily you first had sex.

Researchers questioned 331 young men and women about the way they lost their virginity, including the accompanying emotional anxiety, contentment and/or regret. Then, the respondents were asked questions about their present sex life. Topics such as how much control they felt over theirs, as well as how much satisfaction and well-being they feel.

More from YourTango: Love Bytes: Do Weddings Make Single Women Crazy?

Those who stated their first times were fulfilling and satisfying reported happier sex lives later on, while the ones who stated their virginity loss was accompanied by negative feelings reported lower sexual functioning overall. "While this study doesn't prove that a better first time makes for a better sex life in general, a person?s experience of losing their virginity may set the pattern for years to come," said Shaffer.

The strange thing is that most of us have kinda weird first times, I think. Not bad, just awkward. As I read this research, I initially thought, "That can't be right; most people have a kinda uncomfortable first time then go on to have perfectly fine sex lives." But the more I pondered it in my head, the more I started matching up my own experiences as well as those of my friends to how we behave and feel now.

I, for one, know that my first time was an overall positive experience comparatively because I'm still sort of friends with the guy (even though it happened 9 years ago). He was super sweet about it being new to me and we had been dating for just a few months so I wasn?t particularly dead inside when we broke up a couple more months thereafter. That said, it was definitely awkward, but the rest of my sex life has been overwhelmingly not awkward. Keep reading ...

Facebook Beats, But Slowing Mobile Gains Hit Stock

Facebook (FB) earnings rose for the first time since its IPO, but shares retreated late Wednesday as mobile user and ad growth slowed.

The social networking giant's adjusted fourth-quarter profit rose 13% to 17 cents a share. Analysts had expected a third straight quarter of flat earnings.

Revenue for Menlo Park, Calif.-based Facebook climbed 40% to $1.59 billion, edging views. Sales had grown 32% in each of the prior two quarters.

"We aren't operating to maximize our profits this year," Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told analysts on Wednesday. "We're doing what we think is best...

"We aren't operating to maximize our profits this year," Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told analysts on Wednesday. "We're doing what we think is best...?View?Enlarged?Image

"There were a lot of expectations, and they confirmed that it's a great quarter with a little bit of upside," said Wedge Partners analyst Martin Pyykkonen. "But it wasn't a crushing number."

Most on Wall Street were eying mobile advertising figures, as Facebook continues to refine its targeted ads for users on cellphones and tablets.

'Mobile First' Isn't Enough

Mobile revenue accounted for 23% of all ad sales at Facebook vs. 14% in Q3. But some views had been for at least 30%, or a less-specific "significant increase," as RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Mahaney expected.

"But we're really early in the mobile space and they have a good service, good sponsored stories and traction," said Pyykkonen. "It won't be a success overnight, so I'm happy with 23%."

Shares initially fell 10% after hours, but pared their late trading loss to about 4%. The stock rose 1.5% in the regular session.

Mobile monthly users grew 57% vs. a year earlier, a slowdown from Q3's 67% gain.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg told analysts on the post-earnings con ference call that Facebook is now a "mobile first" business and it will build new apps in 2013.

"We aren't operating to maximize our profits this year," he said. "We're doing what we think is best to grow our platform."

Analysts Still Bullish

Still, Zuckerberg said Facebook is building new multimedia mobile advertisements to add to the text-based ads it started posting in users' mobile "News Feed" in Q2 2012.

It's still "very early" for predictions on how much it will grow in the coming quarters, wrote JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth. But it does look like it's doing well so far, wrote Anmuth.

"We continue to believe that Facebook's ad platform is more differentiated in mobile than desktop," wrote Anmuth, who rates Facebook as overweight. "And the company will continue to push high-quality ads toward the mobile news feed."

Mobile revenue could top desktop revenue by 2014, Anmuth says.

Desktop advertising showed a "slight acceleration" in Q4, Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Youssef Squali wrote in a post-earnings note. It grew 41% vs. 36% in Q3.

Total Facebook user growth slowed to 25%, to 1.06 billion. Year-over-year growth had been 26% in Q3 and 29% in Q2.

Facebook's adjusted operating profit margin was 46%, down from 55% a year earlier. That reflects heavier spending as the company takes product development seriously, says Pyykkonen.

Facebook earlier this month rolled out "Graph Search," a social search that analysts view as a challenge to Google (GOOG) Search.

Zuckerberg reiterated Wednesday that Graph Search is "not a Web search." But it could boost Facebook users in 2013, even though it doesn't yet have any monetization, he said.

"Down the line, if we do this well, this could become a meaningful business for us," he said.

Internet Marketing Strategies Entrepreneurs & Home Based Business

Internet Marketing Strategies for Entrepreneurs and Home Based Business

Internet Marketing can be challenging if you are seeking to make an income online.? Some people are able to understand internet marketing and monetizing sales quickly.? Are you ready for your breakthrough?? Good? here?s how?

I just wanted to share some internet marketing strategies for entrepreneurs and home based business from the latest network marketing event that I attended in Austin last week:

?

Internet Marketing

Internet Marketing

l.? Internet Marketing:? Be Clear ? Be extremely clear in your intentions what your purpose is for being online.? Are you trying to?

- build a list of people to market to

- seeking to build a brand

- philanthropy

- blogging to create traffic to your blog

- provide information to a specific niche

- provide information for a mass market

- create income for a business/affiliate product

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ? shop online(!)? :)

?

2.? Internet Marketing:? Get All In ? Once you?ve decided why you are online, make sure you get ?All In.?? Be committed to your cause.? If you are not committed, you?ll not be committed to the action, and if you?re not committed to the action, you?re basically saying, ?This isn?t going to work.?

?

?

3.? Internet Marketing:? Blogging? ? Blogging works.? Create content relevant to your purpose, and your cause.? If it is something you love to talk about, then you might not know what to blog about first, because there is so much you want to communicate.

?

?

If you are a perfectionist or have some perfectionist tendencies, you?ll end up wanting to put everything in a logical order, which may slow you down when it comes to getting your content out there.? There is no perfect? just get to the business of blogging.

?

?

Actual blogging may even feel a bit awkward as you learn to be yourself, rather than grammatically correct, as if your 12th grade English teacher was about to grade you on your sentence structure, spelling or mechanics.

?

?

You feel that ?freeze? block, don?t you, even as you read this?? I think we all go through that when we first start out, though.? We never realize how afraid we are to make mistakes when it comes to writing, until we actually think about blogging as a method to build a presence online for a business.

?

?

But don?t let your past dictate your future? just go for it.

?

?

Solution?? Just keep pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone to get your message out there.? It?s fun, therapeutic, creates ownership, and will create the results you want according to your intention?if? you?re committed enough to your cause, that is.

?

?

Aim to blog daily.? Life will do it?s best to disrupt your plans, so you are now forewarned.? And if you miss a day?begin as soon as you can again!

?

?

?

4.? Internet Marketing:? Market ? There are many paid and free resources on marketing.? I?ve seen a lot, spent a lot, and have had some expensive learning experiences that have taught me a few things.

?

?

Should you want my completely honest opinion on the best internet marketing as well as blogging platform combined in one that will help you achieve your goals, then take the time to click here and review it, not just assume you know without taking the time to do some diligence.? I?m an ex-Instructor; I?ve done the research meticulously, and I care about my ?students.?? This is? what I recommend to my audience.

?

?

5.? Internet Marketing:? Take Action - Sooner than later.

?Procrastination is not your friend.?

Place that on a sticky notes in the most obvious places in your house so that you see it daily.? Stop making excuses ? just stop.? Push yourself to take action.

?

?

6.? Internet Marketing:? Ignore Everything ? that is keeping you from your goals.? (Take that into context of course, and I?m going to have faith you understand what I mean?) Unsubscribe from lists in your email box.? Tell yourself, you can re-subscribe, once you?ve hit your internet marketing success and achieved your goals.

?

?

Ignore the little things that are keeping you from achieving your daily mission.? If you don?t ignore and change something in your life, realize one, two, and five years from now you still will be in the same place you are today.

?

?

Nothing will change unless you make the effort to put something aside long enough to get the changes you want in your life.

?

?

That?s why it is called Effort.

?

?

7. Internet Marketing:? Be Consistent -? Be consistent no matter what.? Why?? Because your audience is not listening to you today.? But they will?they will change their mind, once they see you making it! :)

?

?

?You are destined for greatness in your life? you?ve only been distracted.? ~ D. Wood

Slain US troops' kin get cash seized from Iran

Reuters, file

The ruins of the Khobar Towers military complex in Saudi Arabia after the June 1996 attack.

By Joseph Ax, Reuters

NEW YORK -- The families of 17 U.S. servicemen killed in a 1996 bombing in Saudi Arabia linked to Iran can collect damages from Iran-funded accounts at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday.

U.S. District Judge P. Kevin Castel in Manhattan ordered the bank, which did not oppose the motion, to hand over more than $260,000 in various accounts linked to Tehran, still a far cry from the full amount to which the families are entitled.

In June 1996, a truck bomb destroyed the Khobar Towers, a housing complex in Saudi Arabia, killing 19 U.S. servicemen. The FBI would later conclude that Iran provided training and support for the attack.

The families won a default judgment in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. against the Iranian government in 2006 for more than $250 million, an amount that was later increased to $337 million. Iran refused to defend the lawsuit in court, claiming it had sovereign immunity.

Billions of dollars in default judgments have been issued against Iran over the years, but plaintiffs have had little luck in collecting the money.

The accounts at the Bank of Tokyo's New York branch had been frozen pursuant to U.S. presidential executive orders and directives issued by the Treasury Department as assets controlled by companies linked to Iran.

In court papers, the bank described itself as a "disinterested stakeholder" and did not fight the request.

The bank is a unit of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.

Sam Mendes, Tori Amos set for UK National Theatre

LONDON (AP) ? The return of director Sam Mendes and a long-awaited musical by Tori Amos were among highlights announced Wednesday for the 50th anniversary season at Britain's National Theatre.

Mendes, who began his career in theater before moving into film, will direct a production of Shakespeare's "King Lear" starring Simon Russell Beale and opening next January. It was originally slated for 2012, but delayed while Mendes made the James Bond adventure "Skyfall."

The 2013 season will see "The Light Princess," a musical adaptation of a 19th-century fairytale with music and lyrics by Amos. First announced two years ago, it will finally open in October.

Artistic director Nicholas Hytner said Wednesday that "musicals just take a hell of a lot of writing and developing and testing out."

The season also includes a version of Shakespeare's "Othello" starring Adrian Lester, and a production of Christopher Marlow's "Edward II." Two major American plays also are in the line-up: James Baldwin's "The Amen Corner," set in a storefront church in Harlem, and Eugene O'Neill's monumental family drama "Strange Interlude."

Hytner said the "groundbreaking" but rarely performed play, which spans 30 years in the lives of its characters, would be cut down from its full five-hour running time for a production starring Anne-Marie Duff.

"If it works, it's exhilarating," Hytner said. "It's a kind of knife-edge affair."

Hytner said the company's 50th anniversary will be marked with a televised performance including "a montage of highlights" from its greatest productions starring many of the original performers.

Founded in 1963, Britain's flagship state-funded theater has had a run of successes in recent years, transferring several hits to Broadway ? including "War Horse" and "One Man, Two Guvnors" ? and reaching millions with live broadcasts to cinemas around the world.

Hytner said National Theatre productions reached 3.2 million people worldwide in 2012.

But like many major arts organizations, it has faced funding cuts as the government slashes spending in a bid to reduce Britain's deficit.

Hytner said he would continue to argue that government cash for the arts should not be cut. He said the National Theatre, which soon will have four shows running in commercial West End venues, made 80 million pounds ($126 million) in income last year ? a major boost for Britain's creative economy.

"The more you put in, the more you are going to get out at the other end," he said.

1 killed in clashes in Egyptian capital

CAIRO (AP) ? Health and security officials say a protester has been killed in clashes between rock-throwing demonstrators and police near Tahrir Square in central Cairo.

The officials say the protester died Monday on the way to the hospital after being shot. It is the first fatality in Cairo since clashes erupted around Friday's second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.

The death takes to at least 56 the number of people killed in Egypt's latest bout of political turmoil.

It also comes one day after the country's Islamist president declared a state of emergency in three provinces worst hit by the violence and vowed to deal "firmly and forcefully" with the unrest roiling the country.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to brief the media.

Just a bite: Considerably smaller snack portions satisfy delayed hunger and craving

How much chocolate would you need to eat to be satisfied? Less than half as much as you think, according to this recently published Cornell University snacking study. Using chocolate chips, apple pie, and potato chips, researchers Ellen van Kleef, Mitsuru Shimizu, and Brian Wansink designed a study to determine if people who were given smaller portions of snack foods would feel hungrier or satisfied fifteen minutes after eating.

Two groups with different portion sizes were tested. The larger portion size group was given 100g of chocolate, 200g of apple pie, and 80g of potato chips, all slightly larger than the recommended portion sizes. This equaled 1370 calories in snack foods. The other group was given 10g, 40g, and 10g of these same foods respectively, for a total of 195 calories. The two groups were given as much time to eat as needed, and were asked to fill out surveys to rate the liking, familiarity, and boredom with the food. They were also asked to rate their hunger and craving before the food was presented and fifteen minutes after the taste tests ended.

The results remarkably showed that smaller portion sizes are capable of providing similar feelings of satisfaction as larger ones. Those given larger portions consumed 77% more food, amounting to 103 calories more, but they did not feel any appetite enhancing or stronger feelings of satiety than the group with the smaller portions. Overall these findings reflect the importance of portion size. While larger portions result in increased food intake, smaller portions may make you feel equally satisfied. The smaller portions can lead to a decline in hunger and desire that would help people limit their food intake. So, next time you are craving a snack food, remember that you can feel similarly satisfied with one handful as you would with two!

Steve Jobs' Diet Put Ashton Kutcher in Hospital Days Before Filming Biopic

Ashton Kutcher spent time in the hospital just days before filming his movie role as former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, revealed the 34-year-old actor at the Sundance Film Festival.

[More from Mashable: YOLO Song From ?SNL? Reaches Top Spot on iTunes Charts]

Kutcher was imitating Jobs' fruit-only diet to prepare for the lead role in jOBS, the indie film about the tech luminary. The biopic premiered at Sundance, garnering mixed reviews.

"First of all, the fruitarian diet can lead to, like, some severe issues," he said. "I ended up in the hospital like two days before we started shooting the movie. I was, like, doubled over in pain.

[More from Mashable: SAG Awards Recap: Best Moments and Acceptance Speeches]

"My pancreas levels were completely out of whack, which was really terrifying ... considering everything."

Jobs died from pancreatic cancer in 2011.

The movie -- not to be confused with the one Sony Pictures is creating based on Walter Isaacson's biography of Jobs -- opens in theaters April 19. In Isaacson's book, though, the author quoted Jobs recalling one of his "fruitarian diets." Jobs described how a trip to an apple farm inspired his company's name: "Apple took the edge off the word 'computer.'"

Actors who portray real people in films often mimic their behaviors to better fit the part on screen, or even go on extreme diets to transform their bodies to look like someone else's.

Tom Hanks lost 55 pounds to resemble a stranded plane crash survivor in Cast Away, for example, while Charlize Theron gained 30 pounds to play a prostitute in Monster.

After Sandy, Scientists Track Displaced Sand To Measure Barrier Island Damage

Superstorm Sandy pushed the Atlantic Ocean right over New York's barrier islands like a daylong tsunami. Communities along Long Island were devastated but are rebuilding. But scientists say there are more Sandy's in the future. A team of oceanographers is now trying to understand what Sandy did to the natural barriers. Their findings could determine whether billions of dollars to rebuild is well-spent or wasted.

Deadly smoke, lone blocked exit: 230 die in Brazil

SANTA MARIA, Brazil (AP) ? A fast-moving fire roared through a crowded, windowless nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday, filling the air in seconds with flames and a thick, toxic smoke that killed more than 230 panicked partygoers, many of whom were caught in a stampede to escape.

Inspectors believe the blaze began when a band's small pyrotechnics show ignited foam sound insulating material on the ceiling, releasing a putrid haze that caused scores of university students to choke to death. Most victims died from smoke inhalation rather than burns in what appeared to be the world's deadliest nightclub fire in more than a decade.

Survivors and the police inspector Marcelo Arigony said security guards briefly tried to block people from exiting the club. Brazilian bars routinely make patrons pay their entire tab at the end of the night before they are allowed to leave.

But Arigony said the guards didn't appear to block fleeing patrons for long. "It was chaotic and it doesn't seem to have been done in bad faith because several security guards also died," he told The Associated Press.

Later, firefighters responding to the blaze initially had trouble getting inside the Kiss nightclub because "there was a barrier of bodies blocking the entrance," Guido Pedroso Melo, commander of the city's fire department, told the O Globo newspaper.

Authorities said band members who were on the stage when the fire broke out later talked with police and confirmed they used pyrotechnics during their show.

Police inspector Sandro Meinerz, who coordinated the investigation at the nightclub, said one band member died after escaping because he returned inside the burning building to save his accordion. The other band members escaped alive because they were the first to notice the fire.

"It was terrible inside ? it was like one of those films of the Holocaust, bodies piled atop one another," said Meinerz. "We had to use trucks to remove them. It took about six hours to take the bodies away."

Television images from Santa Maria, a university city of about 260,000 people, showed black smoke billowing out of the Kiss nightclub as shirtless young men who attended the university party joined firefighters using axes and sledgehammers to pound at the hot-pink exterior walls, trying to reach those trapped inside.

Bodies of the dead and injured were strewn in the street and panicked screams filled the air as medics tried to help. There was little to be done; officials said most of those who died were suffocated by smoke within minutes.

Within hours a community gym was a horror scene, with body after body lined up on the floor, partially covered with black plastic as family members identified kin.

Outside the gym police held up personal objects ? a black purse, a blue high-heeled shoe ? as people seeking information on loved ones crowded around, hoping not to recognize anything being shown them.

Teenagers sprinted from the scene after the fire began, desperately seeking help. Others carried injured and burned friends away in their arms. Many of the victims were under 20 years old, including some minors. About half of those killed were men, about half women.

The party was organized by students from several academic departments from the Federal University of Santa Maria. Such organized university parties are common throughout Brazil.

"There was so much smoke and fire, it was complete panic, and it took a long time for people to get out, there were so many dead," survivor Luana Santos Silva told the Globo TV network.

The fire spread so fast inside the packed club that firefighters and ambulances could do little to stop it, Silva said.

Another survivor, Michele Pereira, told the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper that she was near the stage when members of the band lit some sort of flare that started the conflagration.

"The band that was onstage began to use flares and, suddenly, they stopped the show and pointed them upward," she said. "At that point, the ceiling caught fire. It was really weak, but in a matter of seconds it spread."

Guitarist Rodrigo Martins told Radio Gaucha that the band, Gurizada Fandangueira, started playing at 2:15 a.m. "and we had played around five songs when I looked up and noticed the roof was burning."

"It might have happened because of the Sputnik, the machine we use to create a luminous effect with sparks. It's harmless, we never had any trouble with it," he said. "When the fire started, a guard passed us a fire extinguisher, the singer tried to use it but it wasn't working."

He confirmed that accordion player Danilo Jacques, 28, died, while the five other members made it out safely.

Police Maj. Cleberson Braida Bastianello said by telephone that the toll had risen to 233 with the death of a hospitalized victim. He said earlier that the death toll was likely made worse because the nightclub appeared to have just one exit through which patrons could exit.

Officials earlier counted 232 bodies that had been brought for identification to a gymnasium in Santa Maria, which is located at the southern tip of Brazil, near the borders with Argentina and Uruguay.

Federal Health Minister Alexandre Padhilha told a news conference that most of the 117 people treated in hospitals had been poisoned by gases they breathed during the fire. Only a few suffered serious burns, he said.

Brazil President Dilma Rousseff arrived to visit the injured after cutting short her trip to a Latin American-European summit in Chile.

"It is a tragedy for all of us," Rousseff said.

Most of the dead apparently were asphyxiated, according to Dr. Paulo Afonso Beltrame, a professor at the medical school of the Federal University of Santa Maria who went to the city's Caridade Hospital to help victims.

Beltrame said he was told the club had been filled far beyond its capacity.

Survivors, police and firefighters gave the same account of a band member setting the ceiling's soundproofing ablaze, he said.

"Large amounts of toxic smoke quickly filled the room, and I would say that at least 90 percent of the victims died of asphyxiation," Beltrame told the AP.

"The toxic smoke made people lose their sense of direction so they were unable to find their way to the exit. At least 50 bodies were found inside a bathroom. Apparently they confused the bathroom door with the exit door."

In the hospital, the doctor "saw desperate friends and relatives walking and running down the corridors looking for information," he said, calling it "one of the saddest scenes I have ever witnessed."

Rodrigo Moura, identified by the newspaper Diario de Santa Maria as a security guard at the club, said it was at its maximum capacity of between 1,000 and 2,000, and partygoers were pushing and shoving to escape.

Santa Maria Mayor Cezar Schirmer declared a 30-day mourning period, and Tarso Genro, the governor of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, said officials were investigating the cause of the disaster.

The blaze was the deadliest in Brazil since at least 1961, when a fire that swept through a circus killed 503 people in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.

Sunday's fire also appeared to be the worst at a nightclub since December 2000, when a welding accident reportedly set off a fire at a club in Luoyang, China, killing 309.

In 2004, at least 194 people died in a fire at an overcrowded nightclub in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Seven members of a band were sentenced to prison for starting the flames.

A blaze at the Lame Horse nightclub in Perm, Russia, killed 152 people in December 2009 after an indoor fireworks display ignited a plastic ceiling decorated with branches.

Similar circumstances led to a 2003 nightclub fire that killed 100 people in the United States. Pyrotechnics used as a stage prop by the 1980s rock band Great White set ablaze cheap soundproofing foam on the walls and ceiling of a Rhode Island music venue.

The band performing in Santa Maria, Gurizada Fandangueira, plays a driving mixture of local Brazilian country music styles. Guitarist Martin told Radio Gaucha the musicians are already seeing hostile messages.

"People on the social networks are saying we have to pay for what happened," he said. "I'm afraid there could be retaliation".

Nikkei rises as yen extends loss to new lows

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese equities rose on Monday as the yen extended losses to fresh lows, further improving earnings prospects for exporters as Japan's corporate reporting season enters full swing this week.

Global investor sentiment improved on Friday due to brighter prospects for the European economy and its debt crisis as well as solid U.S. corporate earnings.

Japan's Nikkei stock average <.n225> traded 0.7 percent higher after jumping 2.9 percent on Friday to log an 11th straight week of gains, its longest such run since 1971. <.t/>

Against the yen, the dollar hit 91.26 early on Monday, its highest level since June 2010 while the euro touched 122.91, its highest point since April.

New Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has called for aggressive monetary easing and huge fiscal spending to beat deflation. The yen has fallen some 13 percent since mid-November when he began making those calls as part of his election campaign.

"The potent mix of Abenomics and strong risk appetite abroad is continuing to soften the yen, which means investors will still be buying stocks," said Masayuki Doshida, senior market analyst at Rakuten Securities.

South Korean shares <.ks11> fell 0.7 percent, after closing on Friday at an eight-week low, weighed by caution ahead of fourth-quarter earnings and a stronger won hitting exporters.

U.S. stocks extended a rally to an eighth day, their best run since late 2004, with the Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> and the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> both closing at their highest in more than five years on solid U.S. corporate earnings.

The improving global macroeconomic environment has curbed interest in safe haven assets such as gold.

Spot gold steadied around $1,658.54 an ounce on Monday, still below its 200-day moving average. As riskier equities rallied on Friday, bullion saw its biggest weekly drop this year on Friday.

U.S. crude inched up 0.1 percent to $95.94 a barrel.

Investors pumped $5.65 billion into stock funds worldwide in the latest week, with most of the sum flowing into emerging market stock funds, data from EPFR Global showed on Friday.

The euro hovered near an 11-month high of $1.3480 hit on Friday. The Australian dollar stumbled to an eight-month low against the euro early on Monday.

The European Central Bank said on Friday banks will repay 137.2 billion euros ($185 billion) in 3-year loans, more cash than expected, in a sign at least parts of the financial system are returning to health. The ECB lent banks a total of more than 1 trillion euros in twin 3-year, ultra-cheap lending operations in December 2011 and February 2012, easing funding concerns.

German Ifo business morale index improved for a third consecutive month in January to its highest in more than half a year, further evidence that Europe's largest economy is gathering speed again after contracting late last year.

European shares scaled fresh multi-month peaks on Friday, led by Frankfurt's DAX index <.gdaxi> scaling five-year highs.

Data on Sunday also showed profits earned by China's industrial companies rose 17.3 percent in December from a year earlier to 895.2 billion yuan ($143.9 billion).

Investors will focus this week on the Federal Reserve's Open Market Committee statement on Wednesday and U.S. nonfarm payrolls due on Friday.

Ryan: Obama doesn't actually think 'we have a fiscal crisis?

Ryan (NBC)

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan lashed out at President Barack Obama on Sunday, saying the commander in chief does not have a full grasp of the budget problems facing the U.S. economy.

"I don't think that the president actually thinks we have a fiscal crisis," Ryan told NBC's David Gregory on "Meet The Press" in his first live interview since the 2012 presidential campaign, when he was Mitt Romney's running mate.

Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman, said that while Democrats may have gotten higher taxes on the wealthy as part of the New Year's deal to avoid the fiscal cliff, that's all they'll get.

'"The president got his additional revenues," Ryan said. "So that's behind us."

"Are we for raising revenues? No we're not," he continued. "If you keep raising revenues, you're not going to get decent tax reform."

The former vice presidential candidate also addressed a pair politically-divisive issues: immigration reform and gun control. Via NBC:

Ryan, who has praised a bipartisan set of immigration reforms offered by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, said he was cautiously optimistic about the prospects for immigration reform this year. But Ryan said that Democratic and Republican lawmakers alike would closely watch Obama's speech on Tuesday in Nevada on that topic.

And of the president's gun control measures, Ryan suggested openness to embracing some measures--like requiring universal background checks on gun sales--while expressing skittishness toward other elements of the plan, like the ban on assault weapons.

And as far as his political aspirations for 2016 are concerned, Ryan said it's too early for him to talk about.

"I think it's just premature. I've got an important job to do," Ryan said. "I'll decide later about that."

French, Mali forces head toward Timbuktu

SEVARE, Mali (AP) ? French and Malian forces pushed toward the fabled desert town of Timbuktu on Sunday, as the two-week-long French mission gathered momentum against the Islamist extremists who have ruled the north for more than nine months.

So far the French forces have met little resistance, though it remains unclear what battles may await them farther north. The Malian military blocked dozens of international journalists from trying to travel toward Timbuktu.

Lt. Col. Diarran Kone, a spokesman for Mali's defense minister, declined to give details Sunday about the advance on Timbuktu citing the security of an ongoing operation.

Timbuktu's mayor, Ousmane Halle, is in the capital, Bamako, and he told The Associated Press he had no information about the remote town, where phone lines have been cut for days.

A convoy of about 15 vehicles transporting international journalists also was blocked Sunday afternoon in Konna, some 186 miles (300 kilometers) south of Timbuktu.

The move on Timbuktu comes a day after the French announced they had seized the airport and a key bridge in Gao, one of the other northern provincial capitals under the grip of radical Islamists.

Meanwhile, French and African land forces also were making their way to Gao from neighboring Niger.

French and Malian forces were patrolling Gao Sunday afternoon searching for remnants of the Islamists and maintaining control of the bridge and airport, said Kone, the Mali military spokesman.

The French special forces, which had stormed in by land and by air, had come under fire in Gao from "several terrorist elements" that were later "destroyed," the French military said in a statement on its website Saturday.

In a later press release entitled "French and Malian troops liberate Gao" the French ministry of defense said they brought back the town's mayor, Sadou Diallo, who had fled to the Malian capital of Bamako far to the west.

However, a Gao official interviewed by telephone by The Associated Press said late Saturday that coalition forces so far only controlled the airport, the bridge and surrounding neighborhoods.

And in Paris, a defense ministry official clarified that the city had not been fully liberated, and that the process of freeing Gao was continuing.

Both officials insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Gao, the largest city in northern Mali, was seized by a mixture of al-Qaida-linked Islamist fighters more than nine months ago along with the other northern provincial capitals of Kidal and Timbuktu.

The rebel group that turned Gao into a replica of Afghanistan under the Taliban has close ties to Moktar Belmoktar, the Algerian national who has long operated in Mali and who last week claimed responsibility for the terror attack on a BP-operated natural gas plant in Algeria.

His fighters are believed to include Algerians, Egyptians, Mauritanians, Libyans, Tunisians, Pakistanis and even Afghans.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon said late Saturday that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told Le Drian the United States will aid the French military with aerial refueling missions.

U.S. aerial refueling planes would be a boost to air support for French ground forces as they enter vast areas of northern Mali, the size of Texas, that are controlled by al-Qaida-linked extremists.

The U.S. was already helping France by transporting French troops and equipment to the West African nation. However, the U.S. government has said it cannot provide direct aid to the Malian military because the country's democratically elected president was overthrown in a coup last March.

The Malian forces, however, are now expected to get more help than initially promised from neighboring nations.

Col. Shehu Usman Abdulkadir told The Associated Press that the African force will be expanded from an anticipated 3,200 troops to some 5,700 ? a figure that does not include the 2,200 soldiers promised by Chad.

Most analysts had said the earlier figure was far too small to confront the Islamists given the huge territory they hold.

Since France began its military operation, the Islamists have retreated from three small towns in central Mali: Diabaly, Konna and Douentza. However, the Islamists still control much of the north, including the provincial capital of Kidal.

The Mali conflict will dominate the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Sunday and Monday.

Team flag waves as 49ers arrive for Super Bowl

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Jim Harbaugh stepped to the podium, smirked a bit, and greeted his first news conference as a Super Bowl coach.

"We're super happy to be here," he said Sunday night as his NFC champion San Francisco 49ers arrived in the Big Easy for the big game.

"I think this team has the best focus on unity and winning I've ever been a part of."

Considering that Harbaugh was an NFL quarterback for 14 seasons and a successful college coach before joining the 49ers, he knows something about winning.

Under Harbaugh, San Francisco has been to two NFC title games and, now, to its first Super Bowl in 18 years. The Niners (13-4-1) will play Baltimore (13-6), coached by Harbaugh's older brother, John, in next Sunday's Super Bowl.

He is certain his team is ready for the task as the 49ers seek their sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy; they are 5-0 in Super Bowls.

"These are uncharted waters for a rookie Super Bowl coach," Harbaugh said. "But that's exciting. It's a great thrill, and we have a desire to be in uncharted waters. We always strive for that kind of challenge."

Earlier in the evening, with a team flag waving from an open window of their chartered plane, the 49ers arrived in a businesslike manner. The players calmly walked off the airplane ? no video recorders or cameras, no waves to onlookers.

Most of the team's veteran players disembarked first, including center Jonathan Goodwin, who won a Super Bowl three years ago with the Saints.

"You get to go to the Super Bowl with your childhood team, so that's something special to me," he said. "So hopefully I can find a way to win the Super Bowl with my childhood team."

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, wearing a red wool cap sporting "49ers" on it, mouthed the words to a song on his headphones as he walked on the tarmac.

He seemed just as relaxed 90 minutes later as he met the media.

"Pressure comes from a lack of preparation," said Kaepernick, who took over as the starter when Alex Smith got a concussion in November and has been sensational in keeping the job. "This is not a pressure situation. It's a matter of going out and performing."

Harbaugh said the 49ers came to New Orleans on Sunday to simulate a normal week. He likened their trip to his strategy the last two seasons when the 49ers spent a week in Youngstown, Ohio, between Eastern games rather than return to the Bay Area.

He liked the way the players and coaches bonded during that experience.

"Same approach," Harbaugh said. "Enjoy the moment and the preparation. I think our team enjoys that the most: the meetings, the preparation and then, especially, the competition."

Pollution from forest fires is impacting the health of people with asthma and other chronic obstructive lung diseases, finds a study in Biomed Central's open access journal Environmental Health. This study uses data from pharmacies and dispensaries to measure the increase in drugs needed to alleviate symptoms associated with pollution.

Forest fires burn nearly 1000 km2 of trees in British Columbia every year. The Ministry of Environment keeps a close watch on levels of particulate matter in the air caused by these fires but it is harder to measure the impact of this pollution on the health of people unless they are admitted to hospital.

Researchers from British Columbia Centre for Disease Control and University of British Columbia used dispensary records to find out if forest fires caused an increase in use of short acting beta agonist (SABA) such as salbutamol. Salbutamol sulphate is typically used as an inhaler to relive symptoms of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other obstructive lung diseases.

What they found was that pollution due to forest fires increased the need for salbutamol for up to 4 days after the fire even a relatively small increase in smoke (10g/m3 increase in PM2.5) was associated with a 6% increase in salbutamol dispensations.

Dr Catherine Elliott, who led this study commented, "Our study shows that forest fires and pollution are impacting the health of people with chronic lung diseases. It also shows that it is possible to measure public health by monitoring dispensary databases, and that dispensary data shows effects in small populations, that have not been found in studies on other health measures such as visits to physicians' offices. This information is often routinely collected, and available for the entire population, consequently it is possible to perform more meaningful analysis."

Lewis Carroll: 10 quotes on his unbirthday

Lewis Carroll (b. Jan. 27, 1832) is a writer best known for his novels "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-glass." Combining illogical logic and fantasy, these books have become classics for readers of all ages.?Perhaps less known are Carroll's contributions to the field of mathematics. Under his real name ? Charles Dodgson ? Carroll produced more than a dozen books on math. And down the rabbit hole we go.

Hard Time Paying Off Credit Cards? Try These Tips! | Paixao ...

TIP! Many people have credit cards, however very few use them correctly. Although it?s understandable to be in debt under special circumstances, most people abuse this and get mixed up in payments that are unaffordable.

There is no doubt that bank cards are great for online shopping and for other types of purchases for which you do not wish to use cash. The following article will help you understand how to use charge cards so that you can get the most out of using them.

TIP! Larger purchases, such as electronics, are sometimes best made with a credit card. A lot of cards off protection plans on large purchases that last longer than standard warranties.

Never give anyone credit card numbers on the Internet or on the phone unless you know and trust the company. If you receive an offer that is unsolicited and asks for the card number, be even more cautious. There are a lot of scams that people try to use to collect credit card numbers. Be smart and protect yourself against them.

TIP! To keep your finances secure, only use one credit card for purchases you make on the Internet. If you use more than one card to buy things online, you increase your vulnerability.

Use your cards according to the terms that are set for them. If you have more than one card, compare the terms to decide which to use daily and which one to reserve for unexpected expenses or travel.

TIP! Retain a copy of the receipt when you utilize your credit card online. Keep receipts until you can verify the store that sold you the item charged you the same amount that you are charged on your credit card.

If you utilize several charge cards, choose one to pay off each month. Even if you need to carry a hefty balance on your other cards, having a card that you use and pay off every month can build a stronger credit history.

TIP! Always pay off the whole balance of your credit card if you possibly can. Unless you have 0% interest, finance charges are added every month to unpaid balances if you don?t pay the card off in full.

While you may be a little tempted to purchase most things with a credit card, small purchases should be avoided if you can. Many vendors have a minimum charge for credit card users, which means you?ll be stuck looking for extra things to buy at the last minute. Resist the urge to whip out your card when your purchase comes in under 10 dollars.

TIP! You should never pay a fee to obtain a credit card unless you are obtaining one that is secured. No legitimate credit card company asks for upfront fees.

Hopefully, the information you just read will help you take advantage of the benefits associated with using bank cards. You must be very, very careful with your credit card spending. Reasonable credit card use will increase your credit score while giving you more spending power.
