Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie said it is time to start the discussion of outlawing private ownership of assault weapons and multiple-round ammunition clips.
City leaders say the Sandy Hook school shooting must signal a change in the country and in Des Moines.
In a rare move, the Des Moines City Council spent much of it's Monday night meeting discussing a national tragedy.
Cownie said he spent an hour on the phone with 100 frustrated mayors from across the country discussing how to prevent another senseless mass killing.
The mayors agreed on the need for better background checks for gun owners, tougher federal penalties for transporting illegal guns, and the outlawing of assault weapons and multiple ammunition clips like the ones used in the Sandy Hook shootings.
Cownie says the second amendment doesn't apply in this case.
"Certainly those are not for hunting, and I think we'd all be appalled if somebody went hunting deer with a 100-round magazine," he said.
A moment of silence was held for the victims of the Sandy Hook shootings.?
