CHARLESTON, SC Feb. 17, 2013 - With five regular season games remaining the College of Charleston women?s basketball team tries to finish strong as they host Samford Monday at 7:00 p.m. at TD Arena.

THOUGHTS FROM COFC HEAD COACH NATASHA ADAIR

On looking ahead to Samford after Saturday game vs. Chattanooga

?We don?t have time to linger. Monday we have another tough game against Samford. We have another opportunity to avenge this loss. Everything right now matters. Positioning matters and each game means something. We will get back in the gym and address some of the issues from today, but we have to move forward. We will be ready for Samford on Monday.?

THE SERIES

Samford leads the all-time series 11-0 and won the first game this season 56-47 on Jan.12.

THE CHASE FOR THE FIFTH SEED

As the regular comes to a close teams will be fighting for position going into the Southern Conference Tournament, March 8-11 in Asheville, N.C. The top five teams will receive byes and won?t have to play on the first day of the tournament. Currently the Cougars are in sixth-place with a 7-8 record in SoCon play, while Samford is in fifth-place with a 9-7 record in SoCon play, making the game on Monday an important matchup for both teams.

SCOUTING SAMFORD

Samford comes into the game with a 12-13 overall record and 9-7 mark in Southern Conference play. Most recently the Bulldogs dropped a 52-51 game Saturday at Georgia Southern. The Bulldogs are led in scoring by Jazmine Martin, who is averaging 12.1 points per game and scored 19 against Georgia Southern.

TOLBERT SOCON PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Junior Afreyea Tolbert earned SoCon Player of the Week for games through Feb. 11. Tolbert scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Cougars win at Davidson. With this honor it is the first time since the 2004-05 season that the Cougars have had two SoCon Player of the Week honorees in the same season and first time since the 2000-01 season that two different players have earned the honor, as senior Latisha Harris was selected as SoCon Player of the Week on Jan. 2.

FRYE LEADING COUGARS

Junior Alyssa Frye set the CofC women?s basketball DI record for threes in a season with seven against Furman and now has 74 for the season. Frye has 310 points this season compared to 198 in all of last season. She is averaging a career-high 12.9 points per game this season and has scored in double-figures in each of the Cougars last eight games.

FOUR IN DOUBLE FIGURES

On Monday in the Cougars win at Davidson four players scored in double-figures, led by Afreyea Tolbert with 21 points. The Cougars are a perfect 4-0 this season when four players score in double-figures.

GETTING OFFENSIVE

The Cougars have combined to grab double-digit offensive rebounds as a team in each of their 24 games this season. The Cougars are leading the SoCon in offensive rebounds per game and senior Cathryn Hardy leads the conference individually at four offensive rebounds per game. Hardy is 20 offensive rebounds from tying the Cougars single-season record.

ADVANTAGE COUGARS

In the Cougars last five games they have had a 105-52 advantage over opponents in points off turnovers.

HARRIS ON THE BOARDS

Senior Latisha Harris is one of the all-time leaders in rebounding in CofC women?s basketball history. This season Harris has 213 boards, putting her 51 rebounds short of breaking the single season DI record. Harris? average of 8.9 rebounds per game this season is currently third on the single season record list. For her career Harris is eighth all-time in rebounds with 622 and is 13 rebounds from breaking into the top-five.

BENCH PLAY KEY TO SUCCESS

The Cougars have been getting excellent production from their non-starting players this season. In their 11 wins the bench is averaging 16.2 points per game and 14.6 points per game in all games. The Cougars bench has combined to score in double figures in 19 of their 24 games this season.

DROPPING DIMES

The Cougars have registered 15 or more assists in seven games this season and are 6-1 when doing so. Junior point guard Jillian Brown has already surpassed her assist total from last season (124), which is third on the school record list for assists in a single season. Brown currently has 150 assists and has recorded six double-digit assist games this season. The Cougars had 19 assists vs. 12 turnovers in their win against Western Carolina.

BROWN WATCH

Junior point guard Jillian Brown (Midlothian, Va.) continues to climb the CofC DI career list for assists and is also near the top of the all-time single season assists list. Brown ranks in the top-15 among all NCAA DI players in assists per game this season and has had six double-digit assist games this season and eight for her career. Brown is also in the top-10 in the Cougars DI era in steals per game and minutes played per game.
